Manchester City 3-0 Man United: Lauren Hemp on target in City dominant win.

Similar to bad weather hit the northwest the prior day, Manchester City swept United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their title credentials as they reinforced their position at the league summit.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This result signalled successive Women's Super League losses for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

The Red Devils' capability to juggle league and European soccer with a thin team has been a widely debated topic since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the fixture list, it always appeared this was the period that would truly test this capability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed fatigued throughout, the landmark win against the French side clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had sought to make changes with a several adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

City, in contrast, have no similar workload issues. The City coach made a single alteration from their most recent win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Commanding Opening Period

The storm clouds started to accumulate for the United boss and his side from the opening minute. This was a show of the quality from Manchester City whose energetic offense manipulated and dismantled the opposition with a excellent initial 45 minutes display that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.

This left the home team firmly in control and saw the visitors struggling. Prior to this encounter, United had allowed just few in this WSL season but they fell apart in the wake of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The early indicators came early when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything in the beginning, exploiting the room left by Riviere down United’s right side. Her passes were creating danger and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg scrambled off the line.

United had a number of forays forward, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not trouble Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, dominated possession, taunting their opponents and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Triple Strike

They turned chances into goals with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the campaign.

They increased their advantage with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was allowed to drive through the center from central defence, the pitch became spacious for the hosts. The influential Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before sending a pinpoint driven ball for Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third after a quick change in possession saw Hemp allowed the room to strike a shot home from range.

Second Half

The most obvious change came from Skinner at the interval as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the post, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to record a one shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have added to their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to overcome any opponent who placed above them last season, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to put them in a strong position after nine games.
